Landing my first job

Landing your first job is a rite of passage for any kid, its when he becomes an independent "adult". This is the story of how I got my first job.

Campus recruitment is one of the most stressful times during undergraduate life. Not getting an offer from most of your "dream" software companies, doesn't help matters. ZS Associates was a first time recruiter at NITK when we headed into recruitment season for my batch. Being a consulting company that specializes in Sales and Marketing strategy, they knew how to market themselves really well. However, the guys from the Software group who had come down to interview us were what sealed my decision to try out (not to mention wanting to land some job).

After a couple of rounds of challenging but relatively smooth interviews, I was through to the last round. This was with the head of the Software Development group. Now interviews can be intimidating by themselves, but when you are the last candidate facing the final round with a jet lagged interviewer, you start to get worried about the silliest things. The interview itself didn't go as well as I would have liked. A few silly mistakes, 1 bigger mistake and 45 mins later, the interview was done and I was left to tensely wait for the results which were supposed to come out later that night. Luckily despite everything, they liked something they saw and offered me a job.

What followed was a whirlwind of parties as most of my friends got offers as well from various companies. A year later, I had graduated and, it was time to start work as a professional software developer. Thus, started the next 5 years of my life in Pune and Evanston (from time to time).
